The History of the Partnership between NWFLEC & Dogwood Acres

Beginning in June, 2010 and over the summer, the Northwest Florida Environmental Conservancy (NWFLEC) gave a series of environmental programs to camp staff and counselors at Dogwood Acres about the amazing biodiversity and wildlife of the region.  The programs for summer camp kids were very popular and well received.  Additional environmental consulting and advising grew out of this relationship.    Dogwood Acres is a 453 acre camp developed and supported by the Presbytery of Florida.  Dogwood Acres offers summer camp programs for children and youth, grades 2-12.  The camp also provides an ideal setting for group gatherings, retreats, workshops, weddings, outdoor recreation, worship services, family reunions and other special events, throughout the rest of the year.  In December of 2004 NWFLEC was founded.  The purpose of NWFLEC is to raise public awareness of the incredible natural history and biodiversity of Northwest Florida and the Gulf Coastal areas of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.  NWFLEC is an official, non-profit organization licensed with the State of Florida and the Federal Government.  NWFLEC and Dogwood Acres share many common goals of environmental education, outdoor recreation, preservation and wise management and stewardship of the natural resources of northwest Florida; and creating memorable and character-building experiences for children and adults through nature, learning and adventure!  Through this partnership plans for a new nature center and environmental education and conservation programs are now underway.  A small building, designated as a nature center currently exists at Dogwood Acres.  However, it does not contain any operating exhibits or equipment, animals, or a staff.  NWFLEC is now working with Dogwood Acres to transform this building into one of the most incredible and unique, small nature centers in the region!  Not only will this be an amazing nature center housing many unusual native animals, plants and exhibits; it will be used for environmental education programs, lectures and demonstrations, conservation events and much more!
We urge you to please look over this website to see the status of work and see how you can help and get involved with the nature center modifications and building.  You can also view available educational programs, facilities and resources at Dogwood Acres to make plans for your event or visit to the camp.  The potential of this partnership is nearly unlimited; and the benefits that can result from this for children, students, adults, the region, animals and northwest Florida are very exciting!  Please get involved and help today to make an incredible difference in the future!  Thank you!
